Sir Ian McKellen hints at Gandalf return in new Lord of the Rings movies
Sir Ian McKellen suggests that he will reprise his iconic role as Gandalf for the new Lord of the Rings movies.

Sir Ian McKellen has suggested that he will be reprising his iconic role as Gandalf for the new Lord of the Rings movies.

Producers recently revealed plans to make more films based on JRR Tolkien's work, starting with The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum - a project helmed by Gollum actor Andy Serkis which is due for release in 2026.

McKellen, 85, played wizard Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies and the character is central to the mythology of Middle Earth, meaning that he could feasibly appear in any future films in the franchise.

Speaking to Big Issue, the actor said: "I've just been told there are going to be more films and Gandalf will be involved and they hope that I'll be playing him.

"When? I don't know. What the script is? It's not written yet. So they better be quick!"

McKellen is currently on a break from work for the remainder of the year as he recovers after falling from the stage during a London play earlier this summer.
