Borussia Dortmund through to German Cup third round

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrik Mkhitaryan score in extra time to help Borussia Dortmund beat 1860 Munich in the second round of the DFB Pokal.

Borussia Dortmund have progressed to the third round of the DFB Pokal with a 2-0 extra-time victory over 1860 Munich at the Allianz Arena.

Chances were few and far between in the first half of the encounter, with Robert Lewandowski and Marco Reus coming close for the visitors.

However, things improved at the start of the second period as Jakub Blaszczykowski was denied by the Munich crossbar before Lewandowski failed to control Kevin Grosskreutz's pass when placed in a good position.

Reus was unlucky twice in a minute at the start of the extra-time period. First his deflected attempt on goal was toed onto the post by Munich goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly and then his free kick came back off the bar.

However, Dortmund's pressure paid off in the 105th minute when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang slotted home a penalty. Dominik Stahl brought down Reus inside the area and was sent off, resulting in the Gabonese international scoring from the spot.

Henrik Mkhitaryan wrapped up the win for Dortmund two minutes later when he latched onto Jonas Hofmann's pass, cut inside and tapped in for an easy finish.

Aubameyang almost made it 3-0 to Jurgen Klopp's side late on with a free kick, but saw his effort denied by the frame of the Munich goal.

Elsewhere in the early evening kickoffs in the DFB Pokal, Augsburg beat Preussen Munster 3-0 away, Wolfsburg got past VfR Aalen 2-0 at home and Sandhausen registered a 3-1 victory over Wiedenbruck 2000.
