Milan close the gap at the top of Serie A to just a point with a 2-0 win over Atalanta at the San Siro.

AC Milan made up valuable ground in the Serie A title race tonight with a 2-0 win over Atalanta at the San Siro.

The Rossoneri came flying out of the blocks and could have taken the lead several times before Sulley Muntari's ninth-minute opener.

Kevin Prince Boateng twice went close from the edge of the box before having a close-range effort saved well by Andrea Consigli.

Milan's early pressure paid dividends when Muntari applied an easy finish to a move smartly constructed by Boateng and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Atalanta's best opportunities to level the scores came in the shape of a double chance midway through the first half.

Firstly Christian Abbiati palmed away Germán Denis's header before Alessandro Nesta responded quickly to block Ezequiel Schelotto's follow-up effort.

After a lively opening to proceedings, the pace of the game slowed and that allowed Milan to control the ball in midfield.

The visitors scarcely threatened an equaliser as Milan secured the points courtesy of Robinho's stoppage-time second.

With the result, Massimiliano Allegri's side cut the gap on leaders Juventus to just a point following the Old Lady's 1-1 draw with Lecce.
