The hosts started the game positively, and opened the scoring after just 10 minutes when Thiago launched a ball in the direction of Robert Lewandowski, before the former Borussia Dortmund man headed past Petr Cech from four yards.

Arsenal believed that they had scored an equaliser just two minutes later, as Mesut Ozil bundled the ball into the net, but the referee disallowed the goal as the midfielder was deemed to have handled the ball.

Cech twice denied Lewandowski a second goal, but the hosts found the net again on 29 minutes when Kingsley Coman found Thomas Muller in the centre of the Arsenal box, before the German forward fired past Cech.

The Arsenal keeper twice denied Muller a second goal, but was unable to keep out David Alaba's effort on the stroke of half time, as the Austrian curled a shot beyond Cech from outside the penalty area.

Bayern added a fourth goal after the break, as substitute Arjen Robben met an Alaba cross with his first touch of the match.

The visitors improved as the match went on, as Santi Cazorla was found in a good position, but Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer raced out to prevent the Spanish midfielder from finding the net.

Arsenal pulled a goal back on 70 minutes, when Alexis Sanchez found Olivier Giroud in the box and the French striker volleyed beyond the reach of Neuer and into the net.

Cazorla should have added a second Arsenal goal minutes later, as Francis Coquelin found the midfielder in a good position, only for the former Malaga man to miss the target.

Bayern wrapped up the victory with a fifth goal on 89 minutes, as Douglas Costa found Muller, before the German placed the ball into the bottom corner of Cech's goal.
