Wayne Rooney has insisted that Danny Welbeck has nothing to prove after firing England to a 3-1 win over Slovenia in their Euro 2016 qualifying clash.
The Arsenal striker netted a brace to guide Roy Hodgson's men to a comeback victory at Wembley, after Rooney had cancelled out Jordan Henderson's own goal from the penalty spot on his 100th international cap.
"He doesn't have to prove [anything] to anyone," Rooney told reporters. "He's shown he's a top forward and he's getting better. The more games he plays he's getting better.
"He's scoring goals for England, for Arsenal and he deserves all the credit he gets because he's a fantastic football player."
Rooney's former Manchester United teammate Welbeck has scored 13 goals in 31 appearances for England.
