Arsenal started positively and restricted Southampton's possession in the opening minutes, Santi Cazorla trying a shot from 30 yards.
The home side could have had a penalty when Maya Yoshida was brought down in the box by a Thomas Vermaelen tackle, but referee Lee Probert dismissed their appeals.
Southampton defended well for much of the first half, making it difficult for Arsenal to create chances.
Gaston Ramirez put the Saints ahead in the 33rd minute, firing the ball into the net from the edge of the area.
However, the home side's lead lasted for just seven minutes, when Do Prado stretched to attempt a clearance, but instead turned the ball into his own net to level the scores going into the break.
