Former Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta thanks Liverpool fans for the support that he received while he was stretchered off on Saturday afternoon.

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta has thanked Liverpool fans for the support that they showed as he was being stretchered off on Saturday afternoon.

Arteta was withdrawn from the field of play following a blow to the head that he sustained in a clash with Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson.

The 29-year-old, who spent six years on Merseyside with Everton, received a round of applause from the home faithful as he was carried off.

"I just want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their help and friendship towards me on Saturday," Arteta said in an open letter. "I've since looked back at the TV images of when I was being taken off and just want to show my appreciation to the Liverpool fans at Anfield.

"It is touching to receive that response from the fans of a great club when I am leaving the pitch injured. Thank you.

"I also want to thank Pepe Reina and the Liverpool players who have sent me messages of support and friendship. This again is really touching and just shows class from a great football club.

Arteta will miss tomorrow's Champions League tie against AC Milan.
