Sansom: Arsenal not challengers yet

Ex-Arsenal defender Kenny Sansom thinks that the Gunners will only be title contenders once they sort out their defensive problems.

Former Arsenal left back Kenny Sansom believes that the Gunners need to resolve their defensive frailties before considering themselves title contenders.

The North London side have been uplifted from a dreary start to the season after a run of victories, which have included a 5-3 win against Chelsea on Saturday.

Despite some encouraging results, Sansom believes that there is still a way to go for Arsene Wenger's side before they can challenge for the Premier League trophy.

"You've got to address [the defence] because if you play against the big teams it's going to be tough and you can't concede goals," Sansom told talkSPORT.

"It's a major factor, [Wenger] has got to get the defence sorted out. If you give the back four and maybe one or two of the sitting midfield players to Steve Bould for 45 minutes a day he would sort it out very, very quickly.

"Then you look at Arsenal's frontline and you've got some very good players but if you don't sort the defence out you're not going to challenge the two Manchester clubs."

The Gunners will be hoping to continue their form with a Champions League game against Marseille tomorrow.
