Arsenal could break a club top-flight goalscoring record when they meet Liverpool in Sunday's Premier League clash at Anfield.

Arsenal could break a club goalscoring record when they resume Premier League duties against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

The Gunners remain in the driving seat for top-flight glory amid a remarkable season under Mikel Arteta, sitting eight points clear of Manchester City at the top of the pile.

The champions possess a game in hand, though, and Arsenal's lead could be cut down to five points if Pep Guardiola's team defeat Southampton on Saturday evening.

Man City were the last team to come up trumps against Arteta's men in the top flight, but Arsenal have responded to that setback with aplomb, winning seven Premier League games on the bounce.

During that hot streak, Arteta's team have impressively scored at least three goals in each of their last five Premier League victories against Leeds United, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Everton and Bournemouth.

Should the North London club manage to score at least a trio of goals and prevail on Sunday, it will mark the first time in their top-flight history that they have won six games in a row while scoring three or more goals in each match.

Only once before have Arsenal managed to achieve such a feat, which came 120 years ago during their days in the second division, scoring at least three in six successive wins between September and October 1903.

Then known as Woolwich Arsenal, the North London club put Burton United, Manchester United, Bristol City, Glossop, Burslem Port Vale and Leicester Fosse to the sword by significant margins, recording 8-0 wins over the former and latter.

Arsenal's winning streak in the 1903-04 season came to an end with a 2-1 loss to Barnsley, and they ended up finishing second behind Preston North End that year, earning promotion to the top tier in the process.

While Arsenal could write a new page of history as a club, Aaron Ramsdale is out to join an exclusive crowd of goalkeepers at the other end of the field, having kept nine clean sheets on the road so far this term.

The England international could now become just the third shot-stopper to keep 10 Premier League clean sheets away from home in a single campaign, following in the footsteps of Petr Cech and Ederson.

Cech recorded away shutouts in the double figures with Chelsea during the 2004-05 (11) and 2008-09 (10) campaigns, while Manchester City number one Ederson did so in 2018-19 (11) and last year (10).

Arsenal eked out a thrilling 3-2 win over Jurgen Klopp's side at the Emirates in October, but not since the 2012-13 season have the Gunners triumphed in a Premier League game at Anfield.

Takehiro Tomiyasu and Mohamed Elneny will both miss Sunday's game with knee injuries, but Arteta hinted in his pre-game press conference that one of William Saliba or Eddie Nketiah could take part in training on Saturday as they bid to return from back and ankle problems respectively.
