Former Arsenal forward Alan Smith says that Denis Suarez will only be "a squad player" for the Gunners following his loan move from Barcelona.

Former Arsenal forward Alan Smith has admitted that he was left underwhelmed by the London club's decision to sign Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez on loan during the January transfer window.

Suarez moved to the Gunners in the latter stages of the transfer window, with the 25-year-old due to spend the remainder of the campaign at the Emirates Stadium.

The Spaniard hardly featured for Barcelona in the first half of this season, however, and Smith has claimed that the new arrival will only be "a squad player" at Arsenal.

"Arsenal fans would have loved to have seen a little bit more business, but they did manage to bring in Denis Suarez. How much will he play though as you imagine he may be a bit of a squad player?" Smith told Sky Sports News.

Suarez only played 24 minutes of La Liga football for Barcelona in the first half of the 2018-19 campaign.

The attacker has previous experience of English football, having turned out on two occasions for Manchester City in the early stages of his career.
