Nottingham Forest allegedly make one of Wolverhampton Wanderers' star men their top target for the January transfer window.

Nottingham Forest have allegedly identified Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha as their top January transfer target.

The East Midlands outfit have continued to enjoy an outstanding and unforeseen Premier League campaign, currently sitting in third position in the standings.

However, Nuno Espirito Santo and club officials are seemingly unwilling to retain a status quo at the City Ground, instead wishing to further strengthen their Champions-League-chasing squad.

Earlier this week, it was claimed that an approach had been made for Brentford's in-form attacker Yoane Wissa, an ambitious bid that is expected to be rejected.

Nevertheless, as per the Daily Mail, Forest are not resting on their laurels as they bid to add another high-profile versatile attacker to their ranks.

Forest to take advantage of Cunha situation?

The report claims that Forest are looking to beat the likes of Arsenal Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign the Brazil international.

Cunha has enjoyed another excellent season at Molineux, contributing 10 goals and four assists from his 20 appearances in the Premier League, yet he is currently being criticised for his recent performance.

Head coach Vitor Pereira revealed his disappointment at Cunha seemingly not acknowledging the travelling supporters at Chelsea earlier this week, although a video later showed that Cunha had not disappeared down the tunnel as had first been suggested.

That said, it strengthened the perception of discontent at Wolves at a time when it has been reported that Cunha is stalling on signing a new contract.

Pereira has recently said that he only wants players in his squad that are committed to trying to keep Wolves in the Premier League, the club only outside of the relegation zone on goal difference.

As it stands, it is unclear whether Cunha will take to the pitch against Arsenal on Saturday, that potentially dependent on whether a formal bid is made for his signature.

Would Cunha be prepared to consider Forest?

Up until recently, it would have been perceived that Forest had no chance when it came to trying to tempt Cunha to move across the Midlands to the City Ground.

Sitting six points ahead of sixth-placed Newcastle United in the Premier League table has changed that. The biggest obstacle will realistically be a fee.

Wolves will demand at least £60m for Cunha if they are to give the green light to a sale before the February 3 deadline, a figure that Forest may be unable to pay.

However, Forest's ambition was shown on Tuesday evening when they announced a new long-term contract for one of their key players.
