Arsene Wenger says that Arsenal will "spend big" in order to return to the top of the Premier League.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that he is willing to "spend big" now that the club have paid off the the debt accrued in building the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners - who moved into their new home in 2006 - are without a trophy since winning the FA Cup in 2005, leaving the fans desperate for silverware.

Wenger has now promised to open his cheque book in order to make Arsenal title challengers once again.

"My plan is to keep all of the players we have and then to add maybe, if possible, two new players to the squad," Wenger told Al Jazeera Sport.

"We will spend big [again] because we had restricted finances because we had built the stadium and had to pay that back. You look at any club who has done that, and they have gone down [in performance].

"We stayed at the top level, yes without winning the Premier League, but we were always at the top level. Now we have come out in a much stronger position financially again, so we can spend."

Arsenal are currently sixth in the Premier League.
