Wolverhampton Wanderers reportedly make a move for young Benfica midfielder Joao Carvalho.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are said to have "made a proposal" for the services of young Benfica midfielder Joao Carvalho.

The 20-year-old only made his senior debut for the Portuguese side earlier this month - a Champions League game against Basel - but is being eyed by the Championship leaders as they look to make certain of Premier League promotion in the second half of the campaign.

The Midlands outfit already have a strong Portuguese contingent at Molineux, including the likes of Ivan Cavaleiro, Ruben Neves, Ruben Vinagre, Diogo Jota and Helder Costa, due to super agent Jorge Mendes's strong influence at Molineux.

Carvalho spent the second half of last season on loan at Vitoria de Setubal, making 15 league appearances and scoring once, and also has 13 caps for the Portugal Under-21s side.

Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira is said to have visited Wolves last month to discuss the transfer of Carvalho in January, although it is uncertain whether the potential move would be a half-season loan or a permanent deal.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is also thought to have shown interest in Carvalho in recent months.
