Atalanta edge past Cagliari

Giacomo Bonaventura scores to give Atalanta BC a 1-0 win in their Serie A meeting against Cagliari.

Atalanta BC have claimed a 1-0 win over fellow strugglers Cagliari in their Serie A match at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia.

Victor Ibarbo had a good chance to give the visitors an early lead, but saw his long-range strike come back off the post.

Ibarbo again hit the post soon after and Cagliari hit the woodwork for the third time through Daniele Conti's free kick.

After the break, Giacomo Bonaventura headed straight at the keeper when he was picked out unmarked in the middle.

Midway through the second half, the home side took the lead. Franco Brienza's cross from the right-hand side missed everyone in the box, but it fell kindly to Bonaventura at the back post to fire past the keeper.

Ibarbo was shown a straight red card in the final minute for an elbow on Cristian Raimondi, as the home side held on to move up to 11th in the table.
