Athletic Bilbao defender Xabier Etxeita has admitted that he was 'surprised' at being called into the senior Spain squad for their upcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers.
The central defender was given the nod after both Inigo Martinez and Sergio Ramos pulled out and he has revealed his delight at being given the chance to impress for La Roja.
"It's a surprise. I didn't expect it but the recognition is appreciated," the 27-year-old told AS.
"I was at home when I got the call. I was very excited. It has been a long time in coming. I'm 27. I had to work hard.
"I don't know what I'll feel like when I hear the national anthem. Let's see if I play. Of course I want it. I have to do well during the week to have my chance."
Spain will face Luxembourg on Friday, before taking on Ukraine three days later.
