Atletico Madrid too strong for Las Palmas

Atletico Madrid have moved to within eight points of La Liga leaders Barcelona courtesy of a 3-0 win over Las Palmas at the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday afternoon.

Antoine Griezmann made the breakthrough just past the hour, before Fernando Torres and Thomas Partey added to the scoring against the relegation-threatened visitors.

Diego Costa again missed out for Atletico, meaning that Torres was given the chance to start alongside Griezmann in attack.

Las Palmas boss Paco Jemez, meanwhile, made just the one change to the team that beat Valencia last weekend, with David Simon coming into the back four in place of Mauricio Lemos.

Koke had the game's first half-chance in the fifth minute, but after breaking into a dangerous position, the Atletico midfielder sent his effort harmlessly wide of the post.

Las Palmas had a chance of their own minutes later when Hernan Toledo delivered a low cross into the Atletico box, but Jairo Samperio could not make clean contact under pressure from Diego Godin.

Atletico had another opportunity in the 18th minute when Gabi broke into the Las Palmas box, but the experienced midfielder could not find a route past the away side's goalkeeper Leandro Chichizola.

Torres then sent a low effort wide of the far post, before Griezmann hit the woodwork having met an excellent Juanfran cross with an inventive half-volley.

Both teams had half-chances in the latter stages of the first period, but a fairly non-eventful first 45 minutes finished goalless.

Atletico were the team on the front foot in the first 15 minutes of the second period, although clear opportunities were few and far between, with a long-range attempt from Yannick Ferreira Carrasco just about as close as the hosts came.

Atletico finally made the breakthrough in the 61st minute, however, when Griezmann darted into the Las Palmas box before expertly lifting the ball over Chichizola.

The home side had two excellent chances to add to the scoring in the two-minute period that followed, but Carrasco saw his strike deflected just wide before Griezmann hit the post once again with a clever effort.

Chichizola then kept out a curling Carrasco effort as Las Palmas came under increasing pressure in the second half.

Atletico doubled their lead in the 73rd minute when Torres drove into the Las Palmas box before finding the roof of the net with an excellent finish.

Griezmann came close to making it 3-0 late on with a dipping free kick, but it was Thomas that scored Atletico's third in the 88th minute when the midfielder tapped a Vitolo pass into an empty net.
