The visitors made a bright start but it was David Villa who broke the deadlock after 15 minutes, tapping the ball in from close range.

The hosts began to dominate proceedings and were able to double their lead when Hernan Pellerano brought down Filipe Luis in the area, allowing Diego Costa to slot the ball home from the spot.

However, Rodri was able to keep Almeria in the game at half time, with his first shot parried into his path to give him a simple finish.

Two goals in three minutes allowed Atletico to open up a three-goal advantage, as Tiago drilled the ball in from the edge of the area before Koke chipped the ball into the net for his side's fourth.

Alexis Vidal added a consolation for the visitors in stoppage time, driving the ball past Thibaut Courtois from the centre of the box.
