Nottingham Forest are reportedly expected to win the race to sign Atletico Madrid defender Felipe before the end of the January transfer window.

Nottingham Forest are reportedly closing in on the signing of Atletico Madrid defender Felipe.

Despite the level of spending and incomings during the summer, Forest have picked up where they left off during the current transfer window.

Gustavo Scarpa, Danilo and Chris Wood have already arrived at the City Ground, while Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey is on the brink of completing a switch to the East Midlands.

However, as well as being in the market for a new goalkeeper, with Paris Saint-Germain's Keylor Navas on their radar, Forest want to secure a fresh face for the defence.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Felipe is likely to arrive at the club before Tuesday's deadline.

The 33-year-old has been at Wanda Metropolitano since 2019, making a total of 113 appearances for the Spanish giants during that time.

Nevertheless, just four of those outings have been made during 2022-23, with the veteran featuring in his first senior match for two months when he played the final 13 minutes of the 1-1 draw at Almeira on January 15.

Although they represented welcome minutes for the Brazilian, it has long been claimed that he would be departing Atletico in the first month of the year.

Wolverhampton Wanderers had been continually linked with Felipe until they eventually decided to sign Craig Dawson from West Ham United.

Recent reports have alleged that Bayer Leverkusen have been making a late effort to edge out Forest, being able to offer Felipe the temptation of Europa League football.

However, Romano says that the Bundesliga outfit failed with their approach earlier on Monday, stating that a move to Forest now looked likely.

Cooper will need to ensure that departures also take place over the next 30 hours, with Harry Toffolo's temporary switch to Anderlecht expected to be the first of several exits.

Forest's total of first-team additions since earning promotion from the Championship last season currently stands at 22.
