Klaas Jan Huntelaar brace earns Schalke 04 comeback win over Augsburg

Klaas Jan Huntelaar scores both goals as Schalke come from behind to beat Augsburg 2-1 at the SGL arena to climb to third in the Bundesliga table.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar scored either side of half time to help Schalke 04 overturn their early deficit and beat Augsburg 2-1 in Bundesliga action on Friday evening.

Tobias Werner had given the hosts a sixth-minute lead at the SGL arena, but Huntelaar's double earned Schalke a win which takes them third in the table.

Augsburg would have moved to within three points of their opponents with victory, and Werner put them on course for maximum points when he pounced on a rebound to beat Ralf Fahrmann from close range.

They had plenty of chances to increase their lead, but composure in front of goal was a problem which hampered them throughout the match, as they only managed three shots on target from 21 efforts.

Raul Bobadilla wasted a good opening when squaring behind the unmarked Halil Altintop, before both players shot wide from distance and Werner came close to doubling his tally, all inside the half-hour.

However, Huntelaar punished Augsburg by levelling the scores on 33 minutes, benefitting from Alex Manninger's spill from Kevin Prince-Boateng's shot to tap home the loose ball.

He completed Schalke's comeback 16 minutes later when, after Julian Draxler had released Sead Kolasinac down the left flank, the Serbian crossed for Huntelaar to bury from all of five yards.

Former Sunderland striker Ji Dong-Won came off the bench to help Augsburg search for an equaliser which nearly came when Altintop and Andre Hahn both shot narrowly over Fahrmann's crossbar.

The Schalke keeper was called upon to make an important save in the 88th minute, as he kept out Arkadiusz Milik's header from a tight angle to earn Jens Keller's side a sixth win in eight outings.
