Champions League final in numbers

Sports Mole compiles a selection of statistics to further whet the appetite ahead of the Champions League final clash between Barcelona and Juventus.

Barcelona face off against Juventus this evening for the first time in 12 years, with both sides aiming to claim a treble on the back of impressive domestic campaigns.

Each have had their high points and low points in reaching the Champions League final, including group-stage setbacks and narrow knockout wins, but history will be made in Berlin one way or another.

All over the field key individual battles will take place, as former clubmates and international colleagues alike prepare to do battle in the 23rd final since the competition's inception back in 1992.

Here, Sports Mole picks out a selection of pre-match statistics to further whet the appetite.

This will be the first final in the Champions League history played in the month of June.

Juventus and Barcelona will contest the European Cup final for the eighth time in their history.

Barcelona and Juventus will appear in their fifth Champions League final, taking them level with Bayern Munich. Only AC Milan (six) have been involved in more.

Barcelona will play a Champions League final for the fourth time since 2006; more than any other team in the same period.

The Bianconeri have lost their last three UCL finals since winning on penalties against Ajax in 1995-96.

The Catalan club have won the last three finals they've played in the Champions League, last failing to do so against AC Milan in 1993-94.

This will be the seventh European Cup final between an Italian side and a Spanish one. Italian teams have won only two of the previous meetings.

So far, Barcelona have won only two of the eight European meetings against Juventus (D2, L4).

Three of the last four Juventus goals in the Champions League have been in the 57th minute.

Barca have averaged their lowest possession rate (60.95 per cent) in the Champions League this season since detailed data collection began in 2003/04.

By contrast, Juventus have averaged their highest possession rate (56.19 per cent) in the Champions League across the same time frame.

Luis Enrique's charges have scored more goals in the last 15 minutes of matches in this year's competition (8) than any other side.

However, Juventus are yet to concede a goal in that period of their games in the Champions League this season.

The Old Lady are the team with the most corners conceded in this season's tournament (57), although Barcelona are yet to score a goal from a corner on the European stage this term.

Barcelona have completed an average of 18.7 dribbles per game in the Champions League this season, which is more than any other side.

Alvaro Morata has scored all four of his European goals this season in his last six appearances in the competition.

Neymar is the third Barcelona player to score nine or more goals in a single Champions League season after Rivaldo (1999/00) and Lionel Messi (2008/09, 2010/11, 2011/12, 2014/15).

Xavi could become the player with the most appearances in the competition outright. As things stand, he has played 150 games - as many as Iker Casillas.

Messi has had a hand in 99 Champions League goals in his career (77 goals and 22 assists in 98 games).

The Argentina international has scored in the two Champions League finals he has played in so far (2009 and 2011).

Patrice Evra could become the second player to take to the field in the Champions League final with three different teams (Monaco, Manchester United and Juventus). The first to do so was Clarence Seedorf (AC Milan, Ajax and Real Madrid).

No goalkeeper has kept more clean sheets than Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Gianluigi Buffon (6) in this season's Champions League.
