Images of the Barcelona way may not immediately conjure up visions of a shaggy-haired, rugged defender whose main aim was to put his body on the line to prevent the opposition from scoring, but Carles Puyol is nonetheless inextricably linked with the most successful period in the club's history.
Captain of the club from 2004 until his retirement in 2014, Puyol led Barcelona to 21 trophies including six league titles and three Champions League crowns and will go down as arguably the best defender in the club's history.
Only three players - Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi - have made more appearances for Barca than Puyol's 593, with the World Cup winner hanging up his boots as a one-club man.
Puyol spent 19 years at Barcelona overall, 15 of which were in the first team.
