In the five meetings between the two powerhouses of their respective nations, Borussia Dortmund have never managed to get the better of Barcelona.

That is despite going into the 1997-98 UEFA Super Cup as the Champions League holders, where they would face UEFA Cup winners Barca.

Back when it was held in mid-season over two legs, Dortmund fell to a 2-0 defeat at the Nou Camp, thanks to Luis Enrique's opener and a Rivaldo penalty.

All was not lost heading into the second leg, but an early goal by Giovanni at the Westfalenstadion put the tie beyond BVB, with Jorg Heinrich's consolation meaning very little as Barca took the trophy, winning 3-1 on aggregate.

The two did not meet again for over two decades, until they were drawn in the same Champions League group in 2019, and they would face off on the opening night, and on matchday five.

An underwhelming Barca side under Ernesto Valverde managed just one shot on target in the away fixture, and were lucky to escape with a 0-0 draw after Marco Reus missed a second-half penalty for the German side.

In the return fixture, Barca were much more convincing, sweeping Dortmund aside 3-1 with goals coming from their front three of Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann, while Jadon Sancho netted a late consolation.

The game was of little consequence to the makeup of the group, as both Barca and Dortmund progressed ahead of Inter Milan, but the Catalan side would go on to be embarrassed 8-2 by BVB's rivals Bayern Munich in the single-legged quarter-final.

As two of Europe's great entertainers in the early stages of the 2024-25 season, these met in Germany on matchday six of the Champions League, and produced a thrilling encounter, with Dortmund pegging Barca back twice, but still falling to a 3-2 defeat, thanks to Ferran Torres's late winner.
