Barcelona hold talks with Eric Abidal over future after Lionel Messi criticism?

Barcelona officials allegedly held a meeting on Wednesday to discuss the future of Eric Abidal after the sporting director was criticised by Lionel Messi.

Members of the Barcelona hierarchy have allegedly held a meeting to discuss the future of sporting director Eric Abidal.

After the former defender made comments regarding the work ethic of a number of unnamed players, Lionel Messi responded with criticism of the Frenchman on social media.

With the club's star man being left unhappy with the conduct of Abidal, Sky Sports News claims that discussions have been held behind the scenes.

The report suggests that Abidal could be at risk of losing his job if club officials feel it will help keep Messi at Camp Nou in the long term.

The developments come as Barcelona attempt to prepare for their Copa del Rey quarter-final with Athletic Bilbao on Thursday evening, an important fixture given the recent appointment of Quique Setien.
