Barcelona beat Las Palmas to extend La Liga lead

Barcelona move nine points clear at the top of the La Liga table with a 2-1 victory at Las Palmas.

Goals from Luis Suarez and Neymar have earned Barcelona a 2-1 victory away at Las Palmas, a result which takes the club nine points clear at the top of the La Liga table.

Barcelona needed just six minutes to open the scoring at Estadio Gran Canaria and it came in some style as Javier Mascherano played in Jordi Alba, who fired a ball into the box for Suarez to apply the finishing touches.

However, Las Palmas - who went into the game having recorded just three points from 15 - equalised four minutes later through Willian Jose, who latched on to a flick to slide the ball past Claudio Bravo from 10 yards.

The goal rocked Barcelona but they were soon back on the offensive and Andres Iniesta tested Javi Varas with an effort from the edge of the penalty area.

Just before the half-hour mark, Suarez should have netted his second after meeting a Lionel Messi free kick, but he somehow headed wide from six yards out.

Las Palmas were continuing to threaten in the final third, but six minutes before the break Barcelona regained the lead through Neymar, who fired home the rebound after Messi had a shot well saved from eight yards.

Moments after the restart, the Catalan giants should have made sure of the points through Suarez but after connecting with a Dani Alves knockdown, he could only shoot straight at Varas, who managed to divert the ball wide.

Suarez remained a constant threat for Barcelona, but on the hour mark the home side should have been back on level terms through Willian Jose, who fired wide from three yards after Bravo could only parry the ball into his path.

Chances would be few and far between as the game entered the closing stages, but Las Palmas created another opening with six minutes left, only for Sergio Araujo to hook a left-footed strike wide of the post.

The home side pushed forward in the final minutes but they could not find a goal that their play probably deserved, and they remain in the bottom three of the standings.
