Barcelona make a late attempt to hijack Juventus's move for Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt, according to a report.

Barcelona have reportedly made a late attempt to hijack Juventus's move for Matthijs de Ligt.

De Ligt's future has been the subject of much speculation in recent months, with the 19-year-old captaining Ajax to a league and cup double during an impressive 2018-19 campaign.

Both Barca and Paris Saint-Germain were thought to lead the race for the centre-back at separate stages, while Manchester United and Liverpool have also been credited with an interest.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barca made a late attempt to convince De Ligt to snub a move to Juve to join the Spanish champions, but the teenager has already agreed a switch to Turin.

The report claims that De Ligt was actually open to meeting with the Catalan giants. However, agent Mino Raiola quickly learned that Barca would not be able to match Juve's wage offer, ending their hopes of a late hijack.

De Ligt, who has already been capped on 17 occasions by the Netherlands, scored seven times in 55 appearances for Ajax during the 2018-19 campaign.
