Lionel Messi 'free to leave Barcelona at end of season'

Lionel Messi has a clause in his Barcelona contract which allows him to decide at the end of each season whether he wants to leave the club, according to a report.

Lionel Messi reportedly has a clause in his Barcelona contract which allows him to decide at the end of each season whether he wants to leave Camp Nou.

The 32-year-old has been with Barca since 2001, making his first-team debut in 2004 and since scoring over 600 goals for the Spanish giants in all competitions.

Messi's current deal will run until the summer of 2021, but it has recently been reported that the Catalan giants are keen to offer the Argentina international an extension.

According to El Pais, a clause in the attacker's contract allows him to decide at the end of each campaign whether he wants to leave.

Marca has suggested that the option is designed to allow Messi to return to Argentina 'whenever he wants', which is expected to happen before the end of his career.

The South American has not yet turned out for Ernesto Valverde's side this season due to a calf problem which he picked up at the start of August.
