Is Barcelona star Dani Olmo facing a spell on the sidelines through injury?

Barcelona attacker Dani Olmo suffered "a strong knock" during Spain's UEFA Nations League contest with Serbia on Thursday night.

Barcelona attacker Dani Olmo is not expected to be involved in Spain's UEFA Nations League contest against Switzerland on Sunday evening due to a knock which he suffered in the latter stages of the clash with Serbia on Thursday.

Olmo was replaced by Joselu in the 82nd minute of what proved to a goalless draw, and there were concerns surrounding his knee, with the Barcelona attacker potentially facing a spell on the sidelines.

However, according to Mundo Deportivo, scans have revealed that the Euro 2024 winner did not suffer a knee injury, but the knock was enough for him to miss Spain's training session on Saturday.

La Roja head coach Luis de la Fuente has not officially ruled Olmo out of Sunday's game with Switzerland, but the European champions are highly unlikely to take any risks when it comes to the forward's fitness.

"Dani Olmo will not be participating in the first few minutes of training. He took a strong knock in the last game, and we're unsure how he'll be feeling tomorrow," De la Fuente said in his pre-match press conference.

"We have two excellent forwards in Ayoze [Perez] and Joselu, and they'll be able to deliver what we need."

Olmo has thus far remained with the national side, suggesting that he could potentially be involved off the bench against Switzerland, as Spain bid to record their first victory in the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League.

The 26-year-old has made an impressive start to his Barcelona career, scoring twice in two La Liga appearances, and he is expected to be available for the team's next game against Girona on September 15.

Hansi Flick's side will then open their Champions League campaign against Monaco on September 19, before travelling to Villarreal in La Liga three days later.

Will Rodri feature for Spain against Switzerland?

"Tomorrow we'll have a very tough opponent in front of us. I think that during the European Championship we were the teams that played best," De la Fuente added during his press conference.

"Tomorrow we will see two teams of a very high level, perhaps in one of the most important games that could be currently played in Europe. We are planning to try to enhance our strengths and minimise those of our opponents."

De la Fuente also said that Rodri could be involved against Switzerland despite the midfielder not playing a single minute for Manchester City this season.

"We always prioritise the player's health. (But) Rodri is perfectly trained and at some point he will have to start playing, either here or with his club," said the manager. "If we understand that tomorrow he has to start, then he will start without any risk. But then, football is the way it is and anything can happen."

Rodri missed the second half of the Euro 2024 final against England due to injury, and he has not been involved at club level in the early stages of the new campaign.
