The visitors had to contend with an early setback as Rhys Williams was forced off within the first three minutes, with Milos Veljkovic taking his place on the pitch.
Boro had the first clear chance of the game on the quarter-hour mark, but Jelle Vossen just failed to connect with a James Husband cross before Kike headed wide.
Several minutes later, Vossen fired over the bar following good play by Patrick Bamford, before the hosts countered with a Conor Hourihane shot that also flew over the top.

Aitor Karanka's charges turned the screw as the game went on and saw a number of chances from the likes of Lee Tomlin and Daniel Ayala come close, but Barnsley were able to survive until the break.
Just three minutes after the restart, however, Boro succeeded in breaking the deadlock when Vossen seized on a loose ball in the box before slotting home.
Barnsley had a chance just before the hour when Leroy Lita fired into the side netting, but normal service resumed thereafter, with Kike heading against the bar and Bamford flashing an effort wide.
Boro risked a nervy finale to the game when Adam Clayton was given his marching orders following a second yellow card, but the 10 men from Teesside were able to kill the game off with six minutes left courtesy of Ayala's header from a Grant Leadbitter corner.
