Alfie Mawson: 'No excuses for slow Barnsley start'

Alfie Mawson reveals that manager Lee Johnson remained "calm" after seeing Barnsley fall to a cruel 2-1 defeat at home to Shrewsbury Town on the weekend.

Barnsley skipper Alfie Mawson has refused to make any excuses after seeing his side slip to their third defeat of the season.

The Tykes were undone by Jordan Clark's 94th-minute strike on the weekend in a 2-1 home reverse to Shrewsbury Town.

Despite boasting the youngest side in the Football League, Mawson is reluctant to use inexperience as a reason behind their slow start to the campaign.

"I don't want to say it because it sounds like I'm biding time or making excuses," he told the club's official website. "I want the best out of my team, they want the best out of me, we want the best out of each other.

"I don't want to beg for too much time or make excuses, I want us to gel as fast as we can and it's finding the right balance of doing things the right way and going forward with it.

"We were expecting to get a kick up the backside but [Lee Johnson] was calm with it. He was more upset than annoyed which is understandable, he just said we looked off it."

Next up for 14th-place Barnsley is a home meeting with Swindon Town in five days' time.
