Match Analysis: Roma 1-7 Bayern Munich

Sports Mole analyses the Champions League match between Roma and Bayern Munich at the Stadio Olimpico.

Bayern Munich recorded their biggest away victory in the Champions League by beating Roma 7-1 this evening.

Two goals from Arjen Robben and strikes from Mario Gotze, Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller made it 5-0 at half time.

Roma pulled a goal back through Gervinho's header, but Franck Ribery and Xherdan Shaqiri scored late on to compound the home side's misery.

Here, Sports Mole takes a closer look at the events that unfolded at the Stadio Olimpico.

Was the result fair?

There is no doubt that Bayern deserved to win this evening and they could well have scored more than the seven they did manage. They were in control from the start and produced a stunning display of attacking football that Roma could not deal with. The hosts will feel that some of the goals they conceded could have been avoided, but on this form there are not many teams in world football that could have dealt with the brilliance of Pep Guardiola's side.

Roma's performance

From the moment that Robben gave Bayern the lead, it was one-way traffic for the Roma backline. They could not keep hold of the ball and gave it away cheaply in dangerous positions inside their own half. Their defence was caught out time and time again, with the German side's attack able to work chances on goal at will. At the other end of the pitch they did show some threat, but by the time they eventually scored it was far too late.

Bayern Munich's performance

The way that Bayern dismantled Roma in the first half was reminiscent of Germany's victory over Brazil in the World Cup semi-final. It was an outstanding display all over the pitch and one that will have sent out a strong message to the rest of the teams in this season's tournament. On this form it is hard to see who will stop them and they already look as if they have booked their place in the knockout stages.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Arjen Robben: The Dutch winger was at his dangerous best and scored Bayern's first goal of the evening with a fine curling strike into the far corner. He scored a second before the break and set up Ribery's goal with a fine through-ball in an all-round impressive display.

Biggest gaffe

It is hard where to begin on such a poor night for Roma's defence. Ashley Cole was caught out badly by Robben for both his goals, while goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis should have done better when he spilled Rafinha's strike allowing Shaqiri in to score goal number seven.

Referee's performance

Jonas Eriksson had one key decision and made the right call to award Bayern a penalty when Kostas Manolas handled David Alaba's cross inside the box. Aside from that it wasn't the busiest of evenings for the official as Bayern ran riot.

What next?

Roma: Roma will look to bounce back when they visit Sampdoria in the league on Saturday.

Bayern Munich: Bundesliga leaders Bayern take on second-placed Borussia Monchengladbach on Sunday.
