Bayern Munich's 7-0 victory over Basel on Tuesday set a new Champions League record.

Bayern Munich's 7-0 victory over Basel on Tuesday set a new record in the current format of the Champions League.

Four goals from Mario Gomez, a brace from Arjen Robben and a singular strike from Thomas Muller secured the victory, as the German side advanced 7-1 on aggregate in the last-16 tie.

The previous record, set at 7-1, was held by three teams, Barcelona against Bayer Leverkusen last week, Manchester United against Roma in 2007 and Bayern against Sporting Lisbon in 2009.

The draw for the latter stages of the competition will take place on Friday.
