Celtic are out of the Champions League at the group stage due to their 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.

Celtic have been knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage due to their 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.

Jupp Heynckes's charges were first to threaten when Arturo Vidal picked up a loose ball following a misplaced Mikael Lustig pass in the second minute but proceeded to shank his effort wide of target from 30 yards out.

However, Celtic could have been ahead moments later when James Forrest's ball to the back post found Stuart Armstrong, but the midfielder failed to connect properly and skewed the chance wide from close range.

Bayern went on to open the scoring in the 22nd minute through Kingsley Coman, who made the most of miscommunication in the Hoops back line to latch on to Sven Ulreich's long ball over the top, go round Craig Gordon and poke home.

The visitors' lead lasted until the 74th minute, when Forrest sent a neat flick behind the Bayern defence for Callum McGregor to race in and fire through the legs of the advancing Ulreich.

Celtic could only stay level for three minutes, however, as they fell behind to a Javi Martinez header from David Alaba's cross, the Spaniard suffering a cut to his eye in the process as he collided aerially with Nir Bitton.

Victory for Bayern, combined with Group B leaders Paris Saint-Germain's 5-0 victory over Anderlecht, sees the Bundesliga champions assured of a top-two finish, while Brendan Rodgers's charges are eliminated but remain favourites to claim the Europa League spot.
