Bayern Munich attempted to sign Nice goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel during the January transfer window, according to the Dane's father Peter Schmeichel.

Legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has claimed that Bayern Munich attempted to sign his son Kasper Schmeichel from Nice in January.

While Manuel Neuer has been the long-term number one at the Allianz Arena, the veteran broke his leg in a skiing accident at the turn of the year.

With the Germany international being ruled out for the rest of the season, the Bundesliga champions were required to enter the market for an alternative.

Bayern eventually negotiated a deal with Borussia Monchengladbach for Yann Sommer, who has penned a contract until the end of 2024-25.

However, it appears that a different player could have been deputising between the sticks with Schmeichel suggesting that his son was in contention for a switch to the German outfit.

Kasper only opted to take on a new challenge last year, ending his association with Leicester City to make the switch to the South of France.

Since his arrival, he has made 24 starts in Ligue 1 and the Europa Conference League, but his father has indicated that he may have been open to cutting short his stay at Nice.

Speaking to CBS Sports during coverage of Bayern's Champions League fixture with Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night, Peter said: "It is now Yann Sommer in goal but it could have been my son.

"On the very, very same day they signed Yann Sommer, they were also in talks with my son because it took them about 10 days to agree terms with Borussia Monchengladbach.

"So I could have been stood here watching my son warm up but unfortunately it didn't happen."

Since the start of February, Schmeichel has continued to star in Nice's recent resurgence, contributing to victories over Lens, Marseille and AC Ajaccio.

Meanwhile, Sommer has made a total of seven outings since moving to Bayern, keeping three clean sheets and conceding just five goals.

His latest shutout came at Parc des Princes as Bayern earned a 1-0 victory over the French giants.
