The hosts started the game positively, and came close to taking an early lead as Galatasaray goalkeeper Fernando Muslera denied Raul Jimenez with his legs, before Nicolas Gaitan dragged the rebound wide.

Benfica continued to dominate proceedings, as Brazilian forward Jonas found Goncalo Guedes, before the winger blazed his effort over the bar.

Galatasaray improved as the half went on; Benfica full-back Eliseu blocked a Lukasz Podolski effort, before Jardel prevented Bilal Kisa from finding the net.
