Anthony Knockaert forced a good save out of Birmingham's England international goalkeeper Jack Butland, who watched unconcerned as Andy King sent a tame effort wide of the post.
King provided Leicester with their best chance of the period, crossing for an unmarked Martyn Waghorn, but the striker somehow blazed over from six yards.
Those missed opportunities proved costly for Nigel Pearson's side as the Blues took the lead with a counter-attack goal.
Marlon King broke with the ball down the right, running half the length of the pitch before crossing for Lovenkrands to finish side-footed past Kasper Schmeichel.
