The 21-year-old American has found opportunities hard to come by at St Andrew's this season, having made just one substitute appearance in all competitions.
As a result, he has been granted permission to join League One outfit Colchester until January 1.
Packwood, who spent part of last term on loan with Bristol Rovers, could make his U's debut against MK Dons on Saturday afternoon.
