Relive the end-to-end match between Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich Town on the final day of the Championship season.
2
With automatic promotion and relegation decided, the main focus on the last day of the Championship season was on the race for the playoffs.
Ipswich Town started the day best placed in fifth, but they had to draw at Blackburn Rovers to guarantee their top-six place.
They weren't able to do so, going down 3-2 at Ewood Park, but they will be in the playoffs against arch rivals Norwich City as other results went their way.
Relive today's five-goal game in Lancashire with Sports Mole's minute-by-minute updates below.
Morning all! Forget the Royal Baby being born (it's a girl, by the way), the real intrigue today is in the Championship and the race for the playoffs on the last day of the season.
Here we'll be focussing in-depth on the match involving Blackburn and Ipswich, but fear not, we'll also be bringing you the big goals from matches elsewhere. What's left to decide today is the title and the playoff places. We know that Watford and Bournemouth are automatically promoted, but not which team will be crowned champions. In the playoffs, Middlesbrough and Norwich are assured of a place, while Ipswich, Derby County, Brentford and Wolves can still occupy the final two spots.
As it's the final day of the season, we've got about an hour of buildup instead of the usual half an hour for the Championship. There's tons to get through, so let's get straight to the team news from Ewood Park...
Starting with the hosts, Gary Bowyer makes a pair of changes to his lineup from last weekend's 2-2 draw at Huddersfield Town. In goal, 19-year-old Spaniard David Raya makes his first home start, while further forward David Dunn unsurprisingly starts on what will be his final appearance for the club.
As well as this commentary on the match at Ewood, we've also got this blog covering all 12 games in the division. I'd open that in a new tab and follow both ;)
INELIGIBLE: Both teams have one player who can't feature today as they are up against their parent clubs. Paul Taylor is on loan at Blackburn from Ipswich, while it's the other way around for Luke Varney.
Although both Taylor and Varney are forwards, their ineligibility shouldn't be felt too much by either side today as we have two of the top strikeforces in the Championship on show today...
Both the Jordan Rhodes-Rudy Gestede and Daryl Murphy-Freddie Sears duos have over 40 goals between them, with a total of 89 goals between all four in all competitions (Rhodes 20, Gestede 21, Murphy 25, Sears 23) - Sears was signed in January from Colchester United, so that's his League One and cup goals included as well.
STAT: Rhodes might have the fewest of the four, but by scoring Blackburn's second at Huddersfield last weekend he became the first Rovers player since Alan Shearer to score 20 or more league goals in three successive seasons.
The quartet is also bang in-form, with Blackburn's two goals coming from Rhodes and Gestede at Huddersfield and Ipswich's against Forest being scored by Murphy and Sears. In fact, Blackburn's last eight goals have been scored by either Rhodes or Gestede.
Rhodes and Gestede are undoubtedly of huge importance to the home side, but manager Bowyer has admitted that both could potentially be sold this summer as Rovers can only finish ninth, which is slightly worse than how they fared last term. Read exactly what the Rovers boss had to say here.
REFEREE WATCH: The man in charge today is Graham Scott, who last refereed a match involving these sides back in January when Ipswich lost at home to Southampton in an FA Cup replay. The only Blackburn game he has taken charge of this term was way back in August when Rovers lost at Norwich City. So neither team has had much luck with Scott in charge.
Right, let's go through the permutations for the top eight. Watford and Bournemouth are going up, but the title is still to be decided with the Hornets (at home to Sheffield Wednesday) one point better off than the Cherries (away at Charlton). As Bournemouth have the better goal difference, they will claim the title if they better Watford's result. Any Watford win and the crown is theirs.
It's a similar story for third and fourth place. Middlesbrough (at home to Brighton) are a point clear of Norwich (at home to Fulham), but the Canaries have the better goal difference. Those two sides are assured of a playoff place, but that's not the case for Ipswich (away at Blackburn), Derby (at home to Reading), Brentford (at home to Wigan) and Wolves (at home to Millwall).
For both Ipswich (78pts, +19) and Derby (77pts, +32) a draw will secure their top-six place, but a defeat for either will open the door for Brentford (75pts, +16) and Wolves (75pts, +12). Brentford can leapfrog either with a win, but for Wolves to sneak in they realistically need to hope Derby lose as the goal difference margin to Ipswich is probably too big to bridge. Got it? No? Tough luck.
H2H: The reverse fixture between these two sides back in October was a 1-1 draw and certainly one of the games Ipswich will look back on and regret if they do miss out today. The Blues were 1-0 up and had a man advantage when Ben Marshall curled home a free kick in the 93rd minute to earn Blackburn a point.
That was one disappointing result for Ipswich at home, but, by and large, they have been fantastic at Portman Road. They have more points than anyone else at home going into the final day, but their away record is nowhere near as good. They also have a poor recent record at Ewood, losing five and winning none of their last seven trips to Blackburn. Good signs if you're a Brentford or Wolves fan.
PREDICTION TIME: Right, just 10 minutes until kickoff now. Time for my prediction and I'm going to back a draw. McCarthy is a master of frustrating teams on the road and Ipswich might just play for a draw.
On our big match preview, you, the readers, have also struggled to call the game, with 36.7% of you saying Blackburn, 28.6% going for a draw and 34.7% picking the visitors.
What an incredible start from the visitors and it's goal number 26 of the season for Murphy. Bishop wins a corner and Tabb's delivery is met by the Irishman with a superb volley. How have Blackburn allowed the league's top scorer an unmarked volley about 10 yards out?!
UPDATE: There's been an early goal at the iPro Stadium too and it's a shock one too as Derby fall behind at home to Reading. So, Brentford and Wolves fans would have been devastated when Ipswich scored, but they'll be bouncing now that Derby are losing.
CHANCE! Have Ipswich scored too early? It's certainly an interesting situation for them as they won't want to sit back too much. Blackburn have their first chance as a loose ball in the area drops to Gestede, who doesn't catch it right and fires wide.
CHANCES! Opportunities at both ends as first Gestede, who is phenomenal in the air, meets a long throw-in and heads straight at Bialkowski before, at the other end, Chambers meets Tabb's corner but can only head over.
The 'as it stands' table is certainly something to keep an eye on throughout the day. Right now, Ipswich will be playing bitter rivals Norwich in the playoff semi-finals!
Another corner from the left for Ipswich and again it's an inviting delivery from Tabb. Murphy meets it, but heads it straight into the man in front of him. The visitors are very, very dangerous from set pieces.
UPDATE: Make that two for the Cherries and league goal number 97 for the South-coast side. Harry Arter takes advantage of a silly mistake at the back by Charlton.
OFF THE BAR! Sears so close to his 10th Town goal since joining in January as he runs onto a long ball over the top and blasts an effort from a tight angle against the face of the crossbar. Blackburn keeper Raya barely had time to react.
Here's a good stat from Opta about the lively Sears - He has scored five goals and assisted two in his last seven games for the Tractor Boys. In fact, Sears has netted 19 league goals overall in 2014/15 for Colchester and Ipswich; his best ever return in a single campaign.
Midway through the opening half and you have to say that it couldn't have gone better for Ipswich. They took an early lead and have looked pretty solid since. Blackburn will be keen to attack and with Sears in menacing mood on the counter for Ipswich, the Blues could get more.
The Ipswich net ripples, but it's not for a good reason as Conway's cross from the left lands on the roof of the net. With Rhodes and Gestede in there, Conway has to do better.
Conway now with a corner from the right for Blackburn. It misses the first load of players at the near post, but there's Williamson lurking and his low snapshot is blocked by an orange shirt.
SHOT! Good spell here for Blackburn. Conway is again involved as he's picked out on the right and crosses low for Rhodes, whose shot at the near post takes a deflection off Berra and goes behind.
UPDATE: Wolves out, Brentford into the top six as Alex Pritchard's free kick takes a wicked deflection and loops in. Derby down to eighth as it stands!
Ipswich have had less of the ball (43%), but they've threatened just as many times as Blackburn with four shots and one on target - the all-important Murphy opener.
In the Premier League, there's been a goal after 38 SECONDS in the Leicester vs. Newcastle lunchtime kickoff. Find out who's scored and follow the remainder on our live commentary here. In a new tab, mind. Can't be leaving me on my own, can you?
Ipswich were pretty threatening in the opening 15 minutes, but since then Blackburn have looked more dangerous. McCarthy will certainly be happy to go in one up if the Blues can hold out for the remaining 10 minutes of the half.
Nope, we're all square at Ewood Park as former Tractor Boy Rhodes gets up well to meet Conway's fabulous delivery from the left. Ipswich are still fifth in the table as it stands.
UPDATE: The Blues won't be playing Norwich at the moment though as they have just gone in front against Fulham to climb above Middlesbrough and go third.
BOOKING! First yellow card of the game for Ipswich midfielder Skuse, who arrived late to wipe out Conway down the right. It's all Blackburn at the moment and Ipswich are hanging on.
Frantic stuff as Blackburn pile on the pressure. Conway's delivery is punched clear by Bialkowski, but Berra heads backwards rather than forwardsto give Rhodes a shooting opportunity. Good block by Mings.
It's all going very wrong very fast for Ipswich! Another set-piece goal, which will crush McCarthy, as a long throw is flicked on by Gestede and there's Conway at the back post to sidefoot home on the volley. Conway has had an excellent half and you have to say that that goal had been coming.
The fourth official signals that there will be two minutes of added time. Just 10 minutes ago Ipswich were in front, but now they trail and are hanging on by a thread in the playoff race.
In all four games involving the playoff hopefuls, there is just a one-goal margin so the twists and turns are certainly not done today. You'd expect Derby, especially, to be able to turn around their game against Reading.
Parr in real pain after a collision with Williamson in the middle of the park. It looked like the latter inadvertently made contact with his elbow and could it be a broken or bruised rib for Parr?
Tabb's deliveries were excellent in the opening period, but Hunt is now on free-kick duty. His inswinger from the right is poor and easily claimed by Raya.
CHANCE! Ipswich come forward in numbers, but Hunt again looks a little off-colour with a poor shot from the left side of the area when a cross might have been better.
UPDATE: Brentford are 2-0 up on Wigan, which means that they and Ipswich have the same goal difference (+18). As Brentford have scored more goals this term, they are now sixth. Ipswich are playing Norwich again in the semi-finals.
Bishop's curling shot goes over the top after Berra's header from a corner was hoofed clear from inside his own six-yard box by Lenihan. This game is very tense at the moment.
Disaster for Ipswich as Mings's header out hits Bishop and loops back into the danger area where Gestede is on hand to poke home. The Tractor Boys will now be nervously keeping an eye on Derby's game with Reading. They're still in the top six, remember.
CHANCE! Great chance for Murphy to pull one back for the visitors as Mings's deep cross reaches the Irishman, who makes a real mess of his volley. Ipswich want a penalty as Bishop goes down, but Williamson clearly got to the ball first.
CHANCE! So close to an Ipswich second as Mings's cross is met by Murphy, but the centre is just a tiny bit too high and he can't keep it down. Good response to going 3-1 down by the visitors.
At one end Blackburn want a penalty as Henley is outmuscled by Mings. Scott makes the right call by waving it away and Ipswich race down the other end and have a shot as Sears blasts wide with his weaker left foot.
Ipswich are still in the top six because Derby are losing to Reading. Very little has happened at the iPro, but surely the Rams will have a chance or two to get themselves back into the playoffs.
UPDATE: Moving away from the playoff race, Blackpool's match with Huddersfield hasn't restarted because of a protest in the centre circle by Tangerines supporters.
CLOSE! Raya is a lucky boy as Anderson fails to poke home from close range after the young keeper had mishandled Sears's low cross. Twenty minutes to go at Ewood.
Raya slips as he's about to clear and gives the ball to Hunt. He then slips in Sears, but his attempt to jink back onto his right foot is stopped by Lenihan.
MISS! Oh my god, what a miss by Sears! Mings's header from a corner is saved by Raya, but it drops to Sears about three yards out and somehow he hits the bouncing ball over the bar. My goodness.
Murphy beats Spurr for pace down the right and pulls back a perfect cross to the penalty spot but his teammates have made different runs and Blackburn scramble it clear.
CHANCE! Another chance for Sears and again he misses the target with a left-foot effort that flies into the away fans. They still sing his name as they have heard the Derby scoreline.
Twenty-seven goals this season for Murphy as he slams the ball down the middle from 12 yards. Can Ipswich get one more to ensure that they get in the top six on their own terms?
UPDATE: Brentford go 3-0 up on Wigan and Wolves are now just 3-2 up on Millwall. Wolves can't really get in now and Derby need two against Reading to get in.
UPDATE: MASSIVE news at the top as Bournemouth go 3-0 up and Waford concede at home to Sheffield Wednesday. That means that Bournemouth will be champions as it stands! Watford's title party has well and truly been scuppered.
UPDATE: Brentford miss a penalty to go 4-0 up and Wolves take a 4-2 lead on Millwall. No change in the top six, it still reads 3. Norwich 4. Boro 5. Brentford 6. Ipswich
Bizarre scenes at Watford as they concede a last-minute equaliser to lose the title, but still the fans joyfully invade the pitch as they are promoted.
Well, it was never going to be easy was it? Ipswich lose, but still get into the playoffs as Derby make a horrible mess of their match against Reading. Even in the top two, there was drama as Watford conceded late on to lose the title to Bournemouth.
You have to say that it feels right Bournemouth claiming the title. They have been the most exciting, best footballing team in the division. Good luck to them in the top flight. Will it be Norwich, Boro, Brentford or Ipswich joining them and Watford in the top flight?
Here is the final Championship table for 2014-15. Just look at the teams between 5th-8th - one point between them!
