Marcos Alonso is being investigated by police after a car crash resulted in the death of a young woman in Madrid.
The 20-year-old woman, who has been named only as Barbara, was resuscitated at the scene before dying of her injuries half an hour after arriving at hospital.
The BMW that Alonso was driving crashed into a wall near Real Madrid’s Bernabeu stadium on Monday morning. It is thought that no other vehicles were involved.
The other three passengers - including Alonso's brother Miguel and his former teammate Jaime Navarro - sustained injuries of varying severity. The Bolton Wanderers full-back, who joined from Real Madrid last year, was uninjured.
Alonso could now face charges including involuntary manslaughter and drunk driving, as well as infringing traffic violations.
