Ipswich Town miss chance to go top after Bolton Wanderers stalemate

Ipswich miss the chance to go top of the Championship table after playing out a goalless draw with Bolton Wanderers at the Macron Stadium.

Ipswich Town have missed the chance to go top of the Championship table after playing out a 0-0 draw with Bolton Wanderers this afternoon.

Both sides looked nervy during the opening exchanges, despite good recent form, with neither initially taking control of the game.

The first shot came from David McGoldrick after a clever turn 25 yards out, but Andy Lonergan was there to make a comfortable save.

Lonergan then had to be alert to tip over Daryl Murphy's cheeky lob before Max Clayton came close for Bolton at the other end.

Ipswich grew into the match and created a few good chances as the half went on. Bolton, on the other hand, struggled to fashion much in the final third.

Murphy cut inside onto his stronger left foot and curled an effort a yard wide as Ipswich edged towards an opening goal as the whistle went for the break.

Their momentum seemed to stall after the break, however, with both sides opting for a more patient approach.

Despite the lull in proceedings, Ipswich should have gone in front when McGoldrick's shot fell perfectly for Jay Tabb, but he could not lift the ball over Lonergan and the chance went begging.

Eidur Gudjohnsen came off the bench for Bolton to make his second debut for the club, 14 years after his first, but he could not find a winner, meaning that both sides had to settle for a share of the points.
