Jack Rodwell has reportedly entered talks with Bolton Wanderers following the termination of his Sunderland contract.
Trotters boss Phil Parkinson is aiming to convince the midfielder to take a pay cut to remain in the Championship, according to The Sun.
Sunderland were said to be keen to get Rodwell's £73,000-a-year wages off their books as they prepare for life in League One, although his earnings would have dropped to £44,000 in the third tier.
Rodwell was previously linked with a move to Major League Soccer as well as Greek Superleague side Aris.
The 27-year-old made just two Championship appearances for Sunderland last season, but his time with the Black Cats was marred by injuries.
