Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke has admitted that the club would welcome Mario Gotze back to the club.
The German World Cup winner left Westfalenstadion to join Bayern Munich in 2013, but there is talk of him moving on from the Allianz Arena this summer.
It has been reported that Jurgen Klopp is keen to reunite with Gotze by bringing him to Liverpool, but it appears that they will have competition from Dortmund.
Watzke has claimed that if Gotze does return, he will have to explain to the supporters why he left three years ago.
"If he's on the market, it's clear if we discuss about him," the Liverpool Echo quotes Watzke as saying. "The door is always open for every player who comes from Dortmund.
"If he returns we have to talk with the fans and he has to explain how he left for Bayern, but I don't think that they won't give him a second chance."
Gotze recently claimed that he will make a decision about his future after the conclusion of this summer's European Championships.
