Monchengladbach held to goalless draw

Granit Xhaka is sent off late on as Borussia Monchengladbach are held to a 0-0 draw by Ingolstadt in Bundesliga.

Borussia Monchengladbach's winning run was halted as they were held to a goalless draw by Ingolstadt at Borussia Park this afternoon.

The hosts were in superb form after winning their last six league matches in a row, but Ingolstadt had won three of their four matches this season away from home and started brightly, with Moritz Hartmann firing narrowly wide.

Hartmann was the dangerman for Gladbach in the opening stages and he came closer a few minutes later when he forced Yann Sommer into a smart save, but it was Marvin Matip who should have put the dominant visitors ahead when he looped a header wide from a corner.

An uncharacteristically flat home side began to creep into the match as the first half wore on and it looked as though Raffael was going to add to his four goals in the last three matches when he beat Ramazan Ozcan, only to be denied by a backtracking Matip.

Lars Stindl could only flick a header wide from Ibrahima Traore's free kick as the hosts looked to exert more of an influence on the match in the second half, and only another crucial intervention from Matip on the goalline prevented Fabian Johnson from scoring the game's first goal.

Alfredo Morales was denied by Sommer as chances kept coming at both ends, but as Monchengladbach continued to be frustrated by the visitors they lost their patience, and captain Granit Xhaka was dismissed for a second bookable offence as their Bundesliga winning run came to an end.
