The home side nearly took the lead when Mark Yeates beat Matt Tootle and swung in a cross on five minutes, but Jason Kennedy could only direct his header over Ben Garrett's goal.

Tootle then sent an effort narrowly over the Bradford City goal as Crewe Alexandra made a rare foray into the Bradford City half.

Billy Clarke saw his header from Alan Sheehan's free kick tipped over the bar by Garrett, and from the resulting corner Aaron McLean's effort was scrambled off the line by Anthony Grant.

Phil Parkinson's side continued to dominate as Clarke headed Sheehan's cross wide five minutes before the break, but they couldn't find the breakthrough goal.
