Braga strike late to see off Guimaraes

Rafa Silva scores 16 minutes from time to secure a 1-0 win for Braga over local rivals Vitoria Guimaraes in the Portuguese Primeira Liga.

Rafa Silva's strike 16 minutes from time has given Braga a 1-0 victory over Vitoria de Guimaraes in the Minho derby in Portugal's Primeira Liga at Estadio Dom Afonso Henriques.

Braga put five past Maritimo last weekend and they took the initiative early on as Alan tested Guimaraes goalkeeper Douglas Jesus with a low drive from distance, before the 36-year-old was denied again by the stopper from close range soon afterwards from Ricardo Ferreira's cross.

A stop-start opening was marked by both sets of fans throwing flares and missiles onto the pitch in a hostile atmosphere, but the hosts gradually began to settle and could have gone in front when Santiago Montoya's effort from the edge of the box was well saved by Stanislav Kritsyuk.

Antonio Tomane was also denied by the Russian goalkeeper as Vitoria ended a scrappy first half on top, but Rui Fonte and Rafa had shots blocked inside the first few minutes of the second period as the visitors restarted at a faster pace.

A good spell of pressure for the home side saw Bruno Gaspar fire straight at Kritsyuk after Montoya's initial effort had been blocked, and Ricardo Valente head Gaspar's cross over the bar, but it was the away side who broke through after 74 minutes.

Rafa collected Mauro Silva's pass in the penalty area and fired into the bottom corner past Douglas for his third goal of the season to secure a fourth win from six games for Braga.
