Late Racquel winner downs Costa Rica

Brazil Women beat Costa Rica Women 1-0 to preserve their 100% record in the World Cup and cruise into the last eight in style.

Raquel scored an 83rd-minute winner as Brazil edged out Costa Rica 1-0 to advance into the quarter-finals of the Women's World Cup with their 100% record intact.

The Brazilians went into the final Group D game knowing that their passage into the last eight was secure, but Costa Rica, who sat second before kickoff, needed a win to be certain of their progression.

Only three minutes elapsed before the Brazilians could have gone ahead, but Rosana missed the target from three yards out.

Monica and Darlene went close for the Selecao shortly before the half-hour mark, before Costa Rica's Raquel then forced Luciana into a save in what proved Costa Rica's only attempt of the half.

At the other end, the onslaught continued as Rosana and Darlene both curled narrowly wide of the post, but it was not enough to give them an advantage at the half-time break.

Brazil continued to dominate in the final third but struggled to make a breakthrough, while Costa Rica provided little at the other end to inspire confidence in their hopes of victory.

With South Korea winning in Ottawa, Racquel effectively ended Costa Rica's hopes of the last eight by firing past Dinnia Diaz from an acute angle with seven minutes remaining to ensure that Brazil bring three successive wins with them into the latter stages.
