Kevin O'Connor: 'Everything went Brentford's way'

Captain Kevin O'Connor cannot believe that Brentford have qualified for the Championship playoffs after a final-day victory over Wigan.

Brentford club captain Kevin O'Connor admits that "everything fell into place" on the last day of the Championship season as the Bees move into the playoff places at the expense of Derby County.

Before the day's play, Brentford had to win and hope that either Derby or Ipswich Town lost. Brentford beat Wigan Athletic 3-0 and Derby's 3-0 loss to Reading guaranteed Brentford's place in the playoffs.

"Everything fell into place. I couldn't believe the other results when they were coming in. We did our job, that's all we could do today. Thankfully for us it's gone our way for once," O'Connor told the club's official website.

"We were relying on [goalkeeping coach Simon] Royce's phone but it didn't seem to work too well, but then fans were knocking on the dugout and telling us the other results.

"Everyone knew what was at stake. We had a good win last week, confidence was high and we got a good result."

Brentford will play Middlesbrough in the playoff semi-final, with the first leg being played at Griffin Park on Friday evening.
