Preview: Brentford vs. Charlton Athletic

Sports Mole previews Saturday's Championship clash between newly-promoted Brentford and relegation candidates Charlton.

For a while last season, it looked as though Brentford could be passing Charlton Athletic on their way up to the Championship, with the Addicks involved in a dramatic relegation battle.

As it happened, Jose Riga managed to keep the club in the second tier, although that wasn't enough to earn him an extended stay, with compatriot Bob Peeters coming in instead.

His first competitive match in charge of the club comes on Saturday as they travel to Griffin Park looking to get three points over a team that could well be a fellow relegation candidate.

Peeters will not be the only one making his bow for the club, however, with a number of new faces having arrived since the end of last season.

A whole host of players have also left, meaning that it will be a new-look Charlton side that takes to the field this weekend.

Amongst the expected debutants is a brand new striking partnership of Igor Vetokele and George Tucudean, who will be looking to provide the goals that the Addicks were missing last season.

Brentford, meanwhile, return to the second tier of English football after a 21-year absence having finished second in League One last season.

The Bees adapted well to losing bright young manager Uwe Rosler midway through the campaign, with Mark Warburton coming in to complete the promotion job.

The task of adapting to life in the Championship will be an even bigger one, but they will go into the season in positive mood having improved their squad this summer.

The exploits of Bournemouth, who finished 10th in their first season back in the Championship last term, should also serve as inspiration for a team that is expected to have no fear at making the step up.

A home tie against a team that struggled last season is perhaps the perfect way for Brentford to ease their way back into the second tier, and a good start could do wonders for their confidence levels in the early stages of the campaign.
