January's third-round FA Cup clash between Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace will be the first competitive club match in England where VAR is used.

In March, the Football Association claimed that it would trial the Video Assistant Referee technology in this season's FA Cup, and the fixture between Premier League rivals Brighton and Palace has been chosen.

VAR, which was trialed in England's goalless draw with Germany in November, is used in game-changing situations - goals, penalties and straight red cards.

A two-year trial was approved in 2016, and the technology has been used in the Club World Cup, Bundesliga, Serie A and the MLS with varied success.

Meanwhile, it has been announced that Manchester United's third-round clash with Derby County will not be shown live on television.
