Former Manchester United starlet Ravel Morrison marked his return to British shores by scoring the only goal of the game as Lazio beat Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0 at The Amex.
The Seagulls' pre-season programme may have come to a disappointing end, but boss Chris Hughton will have taken some positives away from the match.
Brighton were on top in the early stages in particular, with Anthony Knockaert and Glenn Murray particularly involved in the hosts' attacking moves.
It was Lazio who scored the game's only goal just short of the half-hour mark, however, as Morrison found the net after Stefan Radu's cross was only half cleared.
Knockaert failed to convert from Gaeten Bong's cross as the Championship outfit pushed for a leveller, while Beram Kayal was also wayward in front of the 10,000 watching spectators.
A number of second-half changes disrupted the flow of things somewhat, though Albion felt that they should have had a penalty late on when the ball appeared to strike an opposition player's hand inside the box.
Brighton were unable to find an equaliser in the remaining time, meaning defeat in their final match of the summer ahead of next week's opener at Derby County.
