Cadiz succumb to early Villarreal goals

Cadiz succumb to a 2-1 defeat at home to Villarreal in Thursday's Copa del Rey last-32 first-leg clash at the Ramon de Carranza.

Cadiz dominated proceedings during the second half of their Copa del Rey last-32 first leg against Villarreal, but ultimately succumbed to a 2-1 defeat in this evening's clash at the Ramon de Carranza.

Both sides began tentatively, but the deadlock was broken in just the 16th minute when Naranjo's ball fell to Gerard Moreno, who tucked home into the bottom left corner and put the visitors in the lead.

Just four minutes later, the Yellow Submarine were two goals up when Nahuel Leiva pushed forward into the box before firing another low shot into the Cadiz net past goalkeeper Alonso.

Jonathan dos Santos nearly added a third with a free kick, but after the half-hour mark, the pendulum swung the way of the hosts, who stepped it up a gear and threatened the Villarreal goal on a number of occasions.

Cadiz pulled a goal back when Arregi converted a corner by striking the ball into the bottom corner past Juan Carlos, and from then on the visitors were effectively under siege.

The home side were given a great opportunity to take the game to Villarreal when Adrian Marin was sent off just before the hour.

However, despite a multitude of chances lashing down on their opponents' goal, Cadiz were unable to find that all-important equaliser.
